413 - HT-309 / Low 128 R5 NGC AU55 R. E. Russell IOU 12½ Cent Token 1837 Columbia South Carolina struck in German Silver. Long assumed to be from New York City due to its association with the Feuchtwanger pieces, ground breaking research by Aaron Packard shows it was actually issued by Robert E. Russell of Columbia South Carolina. Russell operated a Botany Garden which included a Public Bath. Long one of the most desirable Hard Times tokens and rare, particularly so problem free. Now this token is just one of two rare South Carolina Hard Times tokens with a fascinating story and exotic location. We sold an NGC XF40 for $3,100 in our February 2021 auction. From Stacks February 2008 sale and earlier from Bowers & Merena's March 1996 auction. (4000-6000)
