MERCHANT TOKENS: For the purpose of this web site Merchant Tokens will be defined as tokens issued between 1700 and 1900 that are not included in the two most popular time categories: Hard Times tokens from 1832 to 1844 and Civil War tokens from 1861 to 1865. In general they were issued primarily for advertising purposes and as replacement for the scarcity of regular issue US coinage. Rulau divides these remaining periods into the following four time categories: Early American Tokens are those issued from 1700 to 1832. We will attempt to make these as Early to aid in locating in reference book. U. S. Merchant Tokens are those issued from 1845 to 1860. They are listed by Rulau and/or Miller numbers which are the two letter state abbreviation followed by a unique number for that state. This will represent the greatest number of our offerings. U. S. Trade Tokens are those issued from 1866 to 1889.
