Description
277 - (Bust of General Lafayette) on the obverse of an 1836 Large Cent Raw EF Coin FINE. Very attractive counterstamp and coin with bust left of Lafayette nicely centered over Liberty's face. Unlike the more frequently seen Lafayette counterstamps made for sale during Lafayette's final visit to the United States during 1824-5 this piece was obviously struck well after that date and more than a year after his death in 1834. The portrait on this example closely resembles that of Wright and Bale on Baker 197 and 203. Very rare unlisted in both Brunk and Fuld, quite possibly unique. From the John J. Ford collection Stack's Bowers August 2013. (1500-2000)
