203 - NY630 X-1j R7 PCGS MS61 20% Bright with nearly Proof Like obverse. Well struck and attractive, a few light hairlines above the eagle's head keep this out of a higher-grade holder. Feuchtwanger's Composition Three Cents 1864. Rare and popular merchant, one of the keys to a New York merchant set. During the Hard Times period the same issuer made many tokens dated 1837, mostly One Cent but also a few Three Cent pieces. A bit earlier he had also issued some undated Three Cent size personal store cards. A Raw AU brought $3,025 in our December 2010 sale. More recently Heritage sold an NGC MS61 in January 2018 that realized $5,760. From the Lumberton collection earlier from the Bowers & Merena's March 1996 sale then Raw and called MS63, still earlier from PCAC date of sale not recorded. Labeled HT-267 on PCGS's label, another designation for people who would include it in their Hard Times token collection. (4000-6000)
