Description

201 - NY630 U-1a R8 NGC MS63 BN 10% Red, mostly on the obverse. Struck on a much smaller than normal planchet. Carl Diem Constanzer Brauerei, New York with Beer Glass pictured, signed by maker Emil Sigel. Very rare variety in this small size. The usual variety from this merchant is on a large 26mm planchet, while this example is roughly 19mm and likely results from the use of a more conventional Civil War token sized planchet. This mismatch in size of token compared to its dies, occurs very infrequently in the Civil War tokens series. Most result from a die combination of a larger and smaller die. These are exceedingly rare and include 139/432, 134/481 and 190/432 to name a few. These oddities were made to order at the time for collectors. This example, where both dies were the same size, could very well be the result of an unintentional error. However, the existence of the small version of this die combination in Brass would point to a special order. Regardless, this is very rare in its own right. We sold another NGC MS63 BN example in our December 2008 catalog sale that realized $954.48. From the Lumberton and Steve Tanenbaum collections. (750-1000)
