Description
350 - LOW 27 / HT-41 R7 PCGS AU55 1837 Liberty Millions For Defense Not One Cent For Tribute. Very rare variety, just one of five we have seen offered in the last twenty plus years. Long known as the Bushnell series, these fantasy Hard Times tokens are now thought to have been commissioned by Joseph Levick rather than Charles Bushnell. They have long been collected as part of the series first being cataloged by Lyman Low in 1899 with their first auction appearance dating to the early 1880's. Much like the inclusion of unique varieties in a Civil War token collection the inclusion of one of the Bushnell pieces often serves to identify a truly advanced collection of Hard Times tokens. From the Dave Bowers collection earlier from our February 2014 sale were it realized $3,910. (2000-3000)
